On April 6, 2026, the halls of Princeton Day School seemed quieter than usual. As the rest of campus carried on with typical activities, nearly the entire senior class was off enjoying Senior Skip Day—a popular high school tradition in America in which the graduating class collectively misses school on a set date. While many view this as an opportunity to temporarily break free from academic stress and spend quality time with peers before graduation, others feel less sure about making “ditch day” school-sanctioned. This sparks a contentious debate—should Senior Skip Day be officially recognized by the PDS calendar?
For Junior Rashmika Majumdar, the answer is yes. “I think the school should make Senior skip day an official day, but it should be up to the seniors to decide the date,” she shared. “PDS does well at ensuring that our graduating class is celebrated through events like Senior Send-Off, so adding this would just further contribute to that sentiment without significantly impacting the rest of the school.”
However, establishing “ditch day” as part of the school calendar comes with several issues–particularly for AP and other senior-heavy classes. As Fine Arts teacher Gwen Shockey points out, there were “already a lot of snow days and other days off, especially this year, so we have barely been in school as it is.” Additionally, the idea of receiving authorization beforehand to skip school “seems silly” and “defeats the purpose” of the whole tradition. Senior Skip Day is supposed to be “an act of defiance, not permission.” Thus, treating it as a school-sanctioned event would simply make it another holiday—the day would lose its very meaning.
Ultimately, after several long months of juggling college applications, schoolwork, and other extracurricular commitments, participating in senior skip day can be a small yet valuable way to restore mental well-being. Considering, however, that the tradition is rooted in rebellion, it would be illogical to make it a school-authorized day. Some rites of passage simply belong outside of administrative control–Senior Skip Day is one of them.
