Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes AP exams, pollen allergies, and a farewell to snow. On a brighter note, spring also brings warmer weather, Blue and White Day, and prom—a quintessential American high school experience.
This year’s Prom Committee has been working hard to ensure that prom is a magical, wonderful experience for everyone. Junior Anne Heavers, a member of the Executive Board and the Decorations Committee, has revealed that this year’s theme will be A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “We’re just trying to make this a magical experience…we’re trying to make it very beautiful, very fun,” she stated. She also mentioned that the decorations committee was mostly working on lights and colors to achieve a “magic forest” effect. Junior Laura Picard, also a member of the Decorations Committee, stated that the committee’s vision is to have a more “mystical approach” this year.
When asked about past criticisms of the event, junior Bailey Mitra, who sits on the Executive Board and the Music subcommittee, stated, “We know from last year’s prom that some people thought it was too long, so we’re trying to mitigate that, we’re considering shortening it by an hour or so…Some have said that more could be done regarding the actual prom rather than the pre-prom, so we’re focusing on that.” He also stated that while he understands the frustration surrounding last year’s busing situation, the Executive Board has decided that busing everyone is still the best solution. Picard added that since the Prom Committee received some complaints over the food from last year, they are working to improve upon the food options this year. Heavers shared that the Committee is considering bringing back the ice cream bar.
For many, prom can seem scary or intimidating. It is often made out to be the pinnacle of a student’s social life. However, it is important to note that prom is simply a time to have fun and celebrate. Heavers would like those who are feeling apprehensive about attending prom to know that the Committee is “working so hard to have [prom] be such a fun and magical experience.” Mitra echoed her sentiment, stating that, “We’re putting a lot of work in, we have a hard-working committee, and everyone’s putting in their all to make this as fun of a prom as possible, and I think attending would be fun for everyone.”
