43 days–the longest government shutdown in history. This government shutdown was historic not just for how long it lasted, but because it revealed the dysfunction of partisan politics and the failure of legislators to advocate for ordinary Americans. According to the official White House website, the shutdown began on October 1, 2025 and concluded November 12, 2025. The shutdown impacted essential federal and non-essential federal programs, and furloughed thousands of government employees or forced them to work without pay. Additionally, this shutdown cut funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) , delayed air travel, and negatively impacted other critical public services.
The PDS community strongly encourages civil discourse. Students and faculty had many opinions about the government shutdown, and some were directly impacted .Senior Charlie West stated, “I still can’t believe it happened. I didn’t really know too much about what it [the shutdown] meant in the first couple of days, but as time went on I started to realize how serious it was.” West’s journey, from confusion to a more developed sense of the crisis, is similar to the gradual impact that the shutdown had on many who find it easy to dismiss the political drama in Washington.
Similar to West, Senior Anna Burke expressed a combination of concern and confusion when pondering the shutdown:“I just can’t really wrap my head around the fact that it took so long for legislators to come to an agreement. It shows how things in Washington are really working.” Burke, who is enrolled in AP United States Government and Politics, commented , “every day in class we would be patiently waiting to hear if there had been some resolution. But for 43 days there was none.” Burke’s words reflect the feeling of some PDS students, and many Americans.
In the end, the 43-day shutdown of the federal government was a significant and expensive example of political gridlock that interrupted key operations of the federal government and disrupted the lives of many citizens. Ultimately, this shutdown made it clear to me that when political gameship takes priority over real people, everyone loses– and young voters and citizens like us are left wondering when our leaders will finally put the country first.
