The Junior class’s Day of Service sneaks up on most of us every year, unassuming and another part of normal PDS routine. But, reflecting back on our experiences, from making lasagna, helping out at local organizations like thrift stores and the Arts Council, or building furniture at Habitat for Humanity Restore, Day of Service helps us slow down, reflect on our own impact, connect with people outside our friend groups and have fun. Day of Service this year was prelude with something a bit worrisome; a rain storm. But, the rain subsided just in time and the outdoor service groups were able to complete their tasks!
Day of Service often comes with a sense of fulfillment. Besides the break from classes and the busy day to day schedule, Day of Service gives us a chance to make a difference. Between many classes and demanding extracurriculars, making time for service can be a challenge, and that is why Day of Service is such a nice change of pace. Even small acts of service can make a big difference to someone, “I feel like I contributed by making it easier for people to find specific articles of clothing and my volunteering helped the workers at the shop,” says Laura Picard, a Junior who went to the Nearly New thrift store in Princeton. Another group went to the Arts Council where they helped make decorations for an upcoming event they were hosting. Izzy Li reflected on her fulfillment at the end of the day, “It felt great to contribute to a cause that works to make creating and experiencing art accessible in our community.”
That’s what makes Day of Service at PDS so great. The organizations are close to home; the tasks we help with go straight back to our community and our impact feels personal and incredibly positive.
