The freshmen and sophomore classes faced off on Wednesday, February 4th, in a highly competitive basketball game that ended in a 33-33 tie, with both teams trading the lead throughout the game. The energy was electric, solidified by the teams’ fierce play led by Freshman Coach Chase Puran and Sophomore Coach Cooper Fang. Both classes put on an unforgettable show that had students cheering on from the stands, from the warmups until the final buzzer.
At tipoff, the sophomores started with a solid performance, scoring many points as the clock progressed throughout the first half. Co-Referee Aarav Singh mentioned a similar observation, noting the team took up their rivals “strongly” and “aggressively”. Even as substitutions took place on both sides, the sophomores kept momentum. By the time the halftime approached, the team had put on a comfortable lead.
However, while the Freshmen were trailing, Coach Puran was prepared to make the comeback. “It was all about layups,” he reflected after the game. He added that by the second half, their defense was unstoppable. The freshmen soon proved it, mounting a comeback that changed the pace of the game. Leading the effort were PDS Varsity Basketball players Alana Willams and Luke Novak, who converted passes into layups and runs into dominance, executing the plays set by their coach. As their score increased, so did their confidence in winning.
With the game clock inching towards zero, the sophomores were ready for a buzzer-beater to win the game. But the shot fell short, and the game ended in a 33-33 tie. At the time of the writing of this article, the rematch is yet to be played.
No matter what the outcome of that game is, one thing proved clear: the rivalry between the freshmen and sophomores is yet to be finished. Both teams gave it their all, and the game ended as a reflection of their evenly matched effort. “It was a great experience and it was fun to make good and appropriate calls,” Singh concluded. With the first matchup in the books, anticipation now builds for the next chapter in this new tradition.
