The often overlooked and underrepresented PDS fencing team had an amazing performance on February 16 in the District 6 Championships. The team entered West Windsor Plainsboro South High School ferociously determined, with one goal in mind: to ensure that the name “Princeton Day School” would send shivers down every fencer’s spine. This competitive spirit proved to be instrumental throughout the tournament, and they have the results to show for it. The foil team, including senior Sohah Kulkarni, freshman Sharray Bhardwaj, freshman Kimaya Desai, and junior Henry Bobbitt, placed first out of eight other schools in their division. The saber team, composed of senior Patrick Ming, junior Beth He, and sophomore Leo Chang, took second place in their group, out of 10 schools. Impressive individual performances were seen as well, with Kulkarni earning herself second place in foil. Additionally, Chang earned himself second place as an individual in saber, and will be traveling to the State Championship. Junior Carter Malin, a member of the épée team, attributes the team’s success to both “teamwork and individual work.” Malin adds that he enjoys the camaraderie, and believes that this is what truly brought the team to success this season. While the épée team did not see as much success in the traditional sense on Sunday as the foil or saber teams, they were still well within the top 10 teams at the competition. Junior Andrew Thallemer believes that the épée team will only improve in the future, and that great things are ahead for the whole sport. Thallemer and Malin emphasize that they are proud of the whole team, and they believe everyone truly did their best and gave everything they had.
