Students Share Opinions on the 2024 Academy Awards

The Academy Awards of Merit, also known as the Oscars, is an important time of year for many actors. This past March marked the 96th Academy Awards ceremony, which Jimmy Kimmel hosted. The annual event features renowned actors such as Cillian Murphy and Emma Stone. There are several awards, ranging from Best Director to Best Documentary Feature

Junior Noor Choudhury watched the Oscars with her mom. While watching the event, she loves to judge the costumes of the actors with her. Furthermore, Choudhury remarked, “I really loved seeing the documentary section this year, especially the film 20 Days in Mariupol.” This documentary is about Ukrainian journalists who are trapped in Mariupol, which is a city in Ukraine. This film ended up receiving the award for  Best Documentary Feature. Choudhury also stated how surprised she was with the number of awards Oppenheimer won.  The movie received many awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy. She would recommend watching the Oscars, “especially if you’re somebody who watches films or documentaries.”

Similarly, junior Amy Lauer recalled watching “The Best Live Action Feature, The Best Short Film Action Feature, and The Best Film Animated Feature.” As a current student in Introduction to Animation and Design, her favorite part were the design features from the event. Lauer mentioned how shocked she was to find out the winners for Best Animated Feature. She expected Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse to win, but The Boy in the Heron won. Lauer continued to explain how “one of the characters is animated by using collages,” in the movie Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse. This technique is challenging and time-consuming, as artists turn thousands of images into collages. Therefore, Lauer really hoped that Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse would have won because they were “more experimental with different kinds of animation styles.” Lauer concluded by saying, “if you are interested in the film industry, then I would watch the Oscars.”

For those that have not watched the Oscars, I would recommend that you watch it! It is a great opportunity to look at well-known films. I always enjoy watching it with my family and friends. Similarly, there are many films that win like the Best Picture Award which highlights a well-known film of the year.
