As the Class of 2025 prepares for their inevitable departure from PDS, they are preparing to leave and undertaking many school activities for the last time. For example, the annual Day of Service. The day of service is a chance for students to step outside of the classroom and directly contribute to local organizations. With themes of giving back, community engagement, and class bonding, the day served as both a meaningful farewell and a reminder of the impact they can make beyond the classroom. With trips to SAVE Animal Shelter and to Homefront, the seniors participated in their last Day of Service.
Senior Cynthia Shen stated that when visiting SAVE, she felt like the service she was doing was bigger than herself. Shen expressed, “It felt good to give back one last time before we go—I definitely did not want to take this experience for granted.” For Cynthia and many of her classmates, the Day of Service wasn’t just another school activity. It was a chance to reflect on the years they’ve spent growing, learning, and leading.
Another student had a similar experience with her involvement in the Day of Service. Senior Skye Schlenker visited Princeton Nursery School, which provides affordable early childhood education and care to children from low to moderate-income families. Reflecting on her experience, Schlenker stated, “It was really eye-opening to see how there are many different types of preschools–especially in Princeton.” Schlenker went on to say, “I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and honestly, it helped me connect with children far younger than I am.” Schlenker’s reflections offered a perspective on how volunteer opportunities can foster both community awareness and individual growth and development.
The visits that these students experienced are great examples of what students can gain from becoming involved in community organizations. By stepping out of their usual environments, these students realized that there is more that lies outside of 650 Great Road– and that the lessons that matter often begin when the classroom doors open to the world.
