In February, the Junior class partook in their annual Day of Service. The Day of Service is meant to not only give back to our community, but also to encourage students to be involved. With trips to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore to Lasagna Love, students learn how, and what giving back to our community means. Both faculty and students take away valuable learning experiences such as life skills (cleaning, cooking, and organization), treasured memories, and most importantly knowledge of what these organizations are trying to accomplish, and how each organization helps our community. Junior Jessica Salguero expressed, “I learned from Day of Service that we can all help the community in one way, shape, or form– every little thing makes a difference.” Salguero added, “it can be boxing food, taking care of kids, or cleaning cat cages.” Ultimately, Salguero conveys that there are multiple ways to give back to our community.
Junior Shaan Patel explained, “The goal for having a Day of Service is so we [Princeton Day Students] can give back to those in need, and learn to appreciate the service that happens in our community.” Later in our conversation, Patel ultimately expressed that he learned that any amount of service can go far and help people, whether it be directly or indirectly. While some students may appreciate a day without academic classes, the goal of the Day of Service is still learning, teaching students how to engage more fully with their community
Jean Castellano, the Junior Class Dean, said, “Students develop empathy and compassion for others– having a day of service helps to build a stronger community.” Castellano later went on to say, “Students also take away that helping those in need shows how a day of service positively impacts our local community.”
Not only was the 2025 Day of Service for the junior class a success, but it was also an immensely enriching opportunity for all who participated.
