From treating scraped knees to managing chronic conditions, the PDS Health Office is the heartbeat of student wellness on campus. Led by the dedicated Director of Health Services Elizabeth Luciano and her team of Nurses—Sonia Lagares, Barbara Babecki-Pacera, Lauren Canning, Elizabeth Luciano, and Erica Firkin—this compassionate crew ensures that every student, from Pre-K to Grade 12, gets the care they need. The office also oversees essential health paperwork, athletic clearances, annual screenings, and compliance with state immunization requirements, keeping the PDS community safe, healthy, and ready to thrive.
On a typical day, the team addresses a variety of student concerns. Common health issues include minor injuries, cuts, bruises, stomach aches, headaches, and sore throats. Emergencies are handled immediately, and serious cases may involve calling 911. Emergency medication is strategically distributed throughout campus, and first aid kits are available for off-campus activities.
Besides reactive care, the Health Office promotes wellness and prevention, emphasizing hydration, hygiene, a balanced diet, and sufficient sleep. The Health Office communicates with parents directly and collaborates closely with teachers and coaches to manage health issues impacting academics or athletics.
Nurse Luciano finds joy in the variety of her roles — working with students from Pre-K to Grade 12 and managing both hands-on care and administrative tasks. When asked about any challenges she faces in her roles, Nurse Luciano expressed, “The business flow can be inconsistent. You won’t know what happens every day or what injuries are going to be.” The key, she says, is to be knowledgeable, prepared, and adaptable.
Looking ahead, the team hopes to increase awareness of their availability and services, as they want students to feel comfortable seeking help. “Nurses are not threatening and don’t want to send every kid home. Our goal is to keep students healthy, safe, and in school whenever possible,” Nurse Erica commented.
