The Grammys, a music award show held annually to celebrate outstanding artists and achievements in the music industry, welcomed a slew of new artists and returning favorites for nominations on November 8, 2024. Presented annually by the Recording Academy of the U.S., awards are given in a variety of categories, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and more. In particular, this year introduced a list of rising performers, such as Sabrina Carpenter, to the nomination circle. Joining as a first-time nominee, Sabrina Carpenter has become a world-renowned pop artist due to her recent hit, “Espresso,” and her latest Platinum-certified album, Short and Sweet. For the PDS community, this is an incredible win, as shared by sophomore and long-time fan Neya Srinivasan: “I think she is finally getting recognition since spending such a long time being a good artist. People are finally getting to know her.”
Similarly, another popular, new singer recognized for her recent work is Chappell Roan, who has been nominated for six awards. Her rise to the top through her popular song, “Good Luck, Babe!”, has even earned her the title, “your favorite artist’s favorite artist.” Junior April Kopaz expressed, “Chappell Roan has become one of my favorite artists, and I am so excited to hopefully see her win her first Grammy!”
Apart from new faces, the award show has additionally recognized familiar artists, as reflected by the nominations for Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. First, Beyoncé made Grammy history with eleven nominations for her first folk and country album, Cowboy Carter. Further, Taylor Swift returned to snatch six nominations, including one in the category of Pop Duo for her collaboration with Post Malone on the song “Fortnight.” However, some students have mixed opinions on this decision. One PDS student who requested to remain anonymous reported that though they can recognize Swift’s talent, they feel this nomination was not as well-deserved, finding Swift’s music to be too “mainstream” and “generic.”
So, whether celebrating or questioning the nominations for fresh faces or returning performers, the Grammys are guaranteed to be an exciting and thrilling event that no one should miss!
