Dual enrollment at PDS provides an opportunity for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors to hone their skills and earn college credit. Specifically, Latin is offering a dual enrollment class that several students are taking, taught by Dr. Gregory. Students are able to earn college credit through St. John’s University. Those enrolled earned 6 credits. The Latin dual enrollment allows students to be academically challenged and have a deeper understanding of the language. This program allows for students to earn both high school and college credit for their class. Dual enrollment is not only beneficial for the student’s academic transcript, but also allows them to have a greater understanding of the language and the culture it brings along with it.
Dual enrollment Latin is academically rigorous but also provides a wide range of benefits. Dr. Gregory, when asked about what initiated the class of DE Latin, she mentioned, “Once students complete the Latin AP course, they don’t have anywhere to go. So I started thinking about different ways they could continue with Latin, and the dual enrollment program with St. John’s University felt like a perfect fit,” Senior Arya Kalra, when asked about her opinion of the class, mentioned, “It’s a rigorous course that focuses on reading old writings and translating complex Latin.” Dual enrollment is an exceptional opportunity students are able to have at PDS. The DE Latin class not only provides a richer comprehension of the language, but also prepares the students for college. The rigor of the course creates a sense of readiness for the students and the classes they will take in the future. It also enhances college applications by demonstrating the student’s ability to handle the challenging content the class brings. It is evident that the DE Latin course material develops a student’s critical thinking skills and prepares them for their futures.
Kalra said, “Personally, I think it’s a fun class but it is definitely difficult. Dr. Gregory makes it enjoyable.” With Dr. Gregory’s guidance, the program offers a rewarding experience for the students who choose to take it. Senior Addison Figel also mentioned, “Upon completing my AP Latin course in my junior year, I was thrilled with the opportunity to continue my Classics studies at PDS with one of my favorite teachers, Dr. Gregory.” The class consists of a complex language that can be difficult to understand, but students are shown the way to success and are able to academically challenge themselves. DE Latin demonstrates the student’s commitments to challenging themselves and pushing the rigor of their course load. The class gives them the chance to grow academically and appreciate the language.
