Possible Mayweather vs. McGregor fight leaves fans in anticipation
May 18, 2017
Two of the most well-known fighters are back at it again on social media, as American boxer Floyd Mayweather takes on Irish mixed martial artist Conor McGregor, with rumors swirling about a possible mega fight between them. Mayweather is most remembered for his fight against Manny Pacquiao and an unbeaten record, while McGregor is the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion and former Featherweight champion.
Mayweather has been retired from boxing since 2015. He was known to be one of the most lucrative athletes on pay-per-view, and even topped the Forbes Most Paid List during his glory years of 2012 and 2013. Mayweather is also well-known for his undefeated record of 49-0, and will be looking for his fiftieth win in a possible fight against Conor McGregor. After hanging up his gloves, Mayweather founded TMT, a lifestyle brand. At the age of 40, it will be interesting to see whether Mayweather still has what it takes to step back in the ring.
McGregor is a mixed martial artist who currently fights in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and has competed as a featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight fighter. He previously fought in the MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) from 2008-2013 and is known to be a large trash-talker both on social media and in press conferences, challenging his opponents to off-ring altercations. Through his young career, the 28-year-old boasts an impressive record of 21-3. His record does not live up to his performances in the Octagon, however. McGregor faced trouble in 2013 when he tore his ACL during a fight against Max Holloway, but came back in 2014, won his comeback bout, and has been on an upward streak ever since.
A mega-fight between the two of them would have good reasons to happen: the harsh social media feud between the two and the chance to prove who really is the better of the two most famous fighters in the world. Mayweather publicly said that McGregor was afraid of fighting him, and he recently came out of retirement just to do so. “I don’t want to hear no more excuses about the money [or] about the UFC. Sign the paper with the UFC, so you can fight me in June. Simple and plain. Let’s fight in June.” Surprisingly McGregor has been quiet on social media, but has made public statements on how he would like the fight organized, with regards to payment and publicity.
It would be an entertaining bout between both fighters, whether you are a fan or not, but in order for this to ever happen, both Mayweather and McGregor would have to put aside any differences regarding payment and publicity because the goal of this fight is to determine who the best fighter in the world, and money should not change the outcome.
